Is bariatric surgery a cure for obesity?

Weight-loss surgery is a tool, not a cure. Morbid obesity is a disease requiring lifelong treatment. For long-term success in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, you will need to commit to lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and a healthy food plan. The Louisiana Center for Weight Loss Surgery’s Total Lifestyle Care™ program provides a team of professionals – your surgeon, nutritionists and lifestyle counselors – to guide you as you learn and apply new habits. You will be an active participant in improving your own health.

How soon will I begin to see significant weight loss?

This is one of the most common weight loss surgery questions we are asked! Surgery will be the beginning of an ongoing journey toward weight loss through lifestyle changes. After surgery, the difference in your body will make it physically easier to adjust your eating and lifestyle habits. Exercise will be important to ensure that your body burns fat instead of muscle to meet its caloric needs.

As you recover from bariatric surgery, you may discover that clothes that fit a week ago or even a few days earlier are now falling off. You also may find that a walk in the park no longer leaves you breathless.

The amount of weight loss varies per individual. Your doctor will be able to discuss with you how much weight you can expect to lose.

Is there a difference in the outcome of bariatric surgery between men and women?

Both men and women respond generally well to this surgery. In general, men lose weight slightly faster than women do. It is strongly advised that women of childbearing age use the most effective forms of birth control during the first 16 to 24 months after surgery.

How soon after surgery can I return to normal activities and my job?

As with any major surgery, there will be a recovery period when you’ll have to take it easy. Remember during this period, that the better you take care of yourself, the more likely and quickly you will return to normal activity. The recovery period varies among patients and depends on many individual factors including the type of surgery. Many patients return to pre-surgery levels of activity within six weeks of their surgery. It may take only a few weeks for those who have had a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. In the case of open surgery or if there are complications, recovery may take longer.

During recovery, a support network of family, friends and other weight-loss surgery patients can make a big difference. Those who care about you are dedicated to helping you achieve health and wellness. Show your appreciation by accepting their help and allowing yourself to heal.

Does LCWLS have support groups for its patients?

Yes, that’s part of LCWLS’s Total Lifestyle Care. You will have the opportunity to meet with others who also have had bariatric surgery. While most weight-loss surgery patients have wanted to lose weight for a long time, even desired change can be overwhelming at times. Many bariatric patients find invaluable help and support from talking with others who have been through the same transitions. You can also talk with other patients on our Facebook page.

What happens if I don’t follow one or more of the dietary guidelines?

The guidelines are designed to improve the chance of long-term success in losing 70 to 90 percent of your excess weight. If you don’t follow the guidelines, you may not lose or maintain the desired loss. You may also experience complications such as vomiting, diarrhea or malnutrition.
